Thoughts on Work Life Balance

Dear Readers,

While reading the paper three days ago, the headline, 'Ashleigh Barty has decided to hang up her boots!' shocked me as it did tons of others. How could someone in the top for more than 100 weeks (~2 years) who just won two tournaments back to back and was in the prime of her carrier draw out?

But when she pointed out to mental and physical exertion as the obvious reasons, my respect for her thoughts were immense. To me, it also brought out a raw yet subtle truth to the picture, success grinds you to exhaustion. People overwork and never give themselves a comma to rest and revive. A time comes when full stop becomes the reality.

Sadly, even my favorite boy band, One Direction is on a indefinite hiatus because the boys couldn't strike a well balanced work-life relationship. They were on back to back sold out world tours, concerts, recordings and practice sessions that they had barely a few days for themselves. The life looks glamorous in the media but only the person knows how hard it is. The expectations can take a toll and make the person grow disinterested and alienated. The daydream jobs that one enjoys becomes a nightmare.

So, in this world of rat-race it becomes quintessential to listen to your mind, body and soul. If it demands rest, go for it. Give it time to rejuvenate. At the end what is the reason we work hard for success? Isn't the answer happiness? But if we overstress and work in a toxic environment we are killing our happiness with our own hands.

It all boils down to proper planning and execution in the longer course. Maintaining calm and keeping cool and being less bothered about success and failure should be on our checklists. As a society, we should keep our expectations from a person at bay. None knows when those hopes and expectations can jeopardize someone's stability. It is our social responsibility to create a optimistic world so that both, you and I, can live a happier life.

Yours ever,
Diksha
